Recycled Glass
Our glass products are made from 100% post-consumer or 100% post-industrial recycled glass. Most of the glass is salvaged window pane glass that is then crushed and mixed with elements of vibrant color. The crushed glass is heated and transformed into a glowing liquid. Artisans at the foundry then form the glass into tiles, awards, and other objets d'art. The process of creating glass is hot, as you can imagine. It is also dusty. Left unused, glass dust must be disposed of as hazardous waste. This dust can be safely diverted from the waste stream if it is reused to create more glass. The only hitch: the glass must be black. We favor 100% post-consumer products, but for our new Ebony collection -- which is 50% post-consumer and 50% post-industrial -- we’re making an exception. Our Ebony glass awards, created by The Fenton Art Glass Company, are stunning. The pieces are smooth, rich, and clear, and sandblast flawlessly. The items in our recycled glass collection are objects of simple beauty in vibrant colors. The glass itself is slightly imperfect, with occasional bubbles that catch the light and remind us of the unique properties of the medium. Is glass a liquid or a solid? The newest additions to our recycled glass collection are hand forged by artisans from The Fenton Art Glass company. Since 1905, Fenton has been making much of America’s finest artisan glass and providing vital jobs in West Virginia. When asked if they would consider making recycled glass awards for Rivanna, they leapt at the opportunity with the enthusiasm and determination of a small start-up. They found a local source for recycled bottle glass and brought over a century of experience to bear in the glass production process. We are thrilled with the results and know you will be too.
