Rivanna volunteers for Habitat on 2015 B Corp Day of Service

June is B the Change in Our Communities month! B Corps around the country will be taking a day off from their usual business activities to spend time helping out in their community. B Corporations are companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental issues. While Rivanna has been using business to do good since its launch in 2001, we officially joined the ranks of more than 1,000 B Corps worldwide in 2011.

As a member of the B Corp family, the Rivanna team was happy to lend a hand to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville last Thursday. Looking fashionable in our hardhats, we set to work on painting, sanding, digging, and cleaning the two houses on site. While we were sweating it out in Charlottesville, our VP of Business Development, Gretchen Wirth, was beating the heat all the way on the other side of the country. Stationed in San Jose, California, Gretchen has been preparing for the Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer, a 2-day, 39.3-mile event in July. Although we missed her at Habitat, we are excited for her to support such a meaningful cause and will be rooting for her the whole way!

Since Habitat Charlottesville’s founding in 1991, the organization has helped over 140 low-income families secure the affordable housing they need. What’s even better than affordable housing? Affordable and sustainable housing, that’s what. And that’s exactly what Habitat has been doing over the last decade by incorporating green building techniques into its building model. As a fellow environmentally conscious business, we applaud Habitat’s efforts to serve their clients in greener ways and are grateful to have worked with them on our day of service!

Rivanna volunteersWe were not the only ones who got a little dirty while serving the community, though. Our B Corp friends in Richmond, TMI Consulting Inc, arranged a B of Service Day for Richmond B Corps on June 12th. Volunteers from various B Corps, including Acorn Sign Graphics and River City CCS, spent the day giving a local Richmond restaurant called the Chicken Box a fresh, new paint job as part of a neighborhood revitalization project. The finished product looks awesome – we could have used some of that paint expertise!

And it’s not just Virginia companies that are getting involved; these service days are happening nationwide. B Corps in New York are getting together this week to work with City Harvest, an organization that collects excess food in the tri-state area and delivers it free of charge to community food programs. New York B Corp employees will spend the day repacking collected food so it’s ready for delivery!

Looking over to the West, Colorado B Corps Simple Energy, The Tea Spot, Namaste Solar, Application Experts LLC, Door to Door Organics, and mGive spent their day lending a helping hand to Growing Gardens, an organization dedicated to building communities through sustainable urban agriculture. What a great way to do some good for the community and the environment!

As June winds down, we are excited to see what other B Corps have done to make a positive impact in their areas. Here at Rivanna, we tip our (hard)hats to our fellow change-makers continuing to make a difference one day, meal, seed and paint stroke at a time! What a great story! Didn’t realize that Habitat for Humanity uses sustainable building practices — good to know. The VA summer is no joke, so kudos to you all for braving the heat :)
