10 Big ReasonsSoftware giant Salesforce recently announced its Nature Positive Strategy to accelerate its existing commitment to net zero. We're pleased, relieved, and, frankly, a little envious.
We're pleased because we've been running our business on Salesforce software since 2005, when the company had fewer than 1,000 employees. Back then, we had no way of knowing that the software would become the cornerstone of our business infrastructure and that our vendor would become a CRM behemoth and a climate champion.
We're also pleased because Salesforce is one of our customers, and it's no secret we love making awards and plaques for people who share our values.
We're relieved because, with the myriad business challenges facing the company at the moment -- workforce reductions, cost cutting, leadership changes -- Salesforce could easily lose focus on its climate commitment. The actual cost to our planet would be enormous given the depth and breadth of the company's climate impacts. The opportunity cost, given the company's global influence, would be unfathomable.
As such, we are admittingly envious. As a small business deeply committed to planet and community, we are envious of the scale at which Salesforce and its 70,000+ employees can effect positive social and environmental change. Committed to nature conservation and restoration? Plant a 100 million trees by 2030! Need a sustainability management solution? Build your own Net Zero Cloud and offer it your customers! For a company the size of Salesforce, the opportunities to do good work and do well by the planet -- at scale -- are endless. We're not happy with much of the news that has come from Salesforce of late, but, with respect to maintaining the company's climate commitment, Salesforce is stepping up and staying focused, and we're glad to see it.
While our business can't paint with a broad brush as Salesforce and other large companies can, we do understand that we have our own part to play. Collectively, small businesses like ours can also make huge climate impacts. Over 90% of the world’s businesses are small to medium-sized enterprises SMEs). When it comes to tackling climate change, SMEs have a huge responsibilities and huge opportunities. Stay tuned for our next post on the important work of the SME Climate Hub.
